Shaker Boxes Scrapbooking Tips and Tricks

A “shaker” box is something like a child’s rattle. It is a decorated embellishment for a scrapbook which has a clear plastic top through which one can see loose items inside. When shaken, it makes a rattling sound. This is a wonderful way to add a special flair to your pages – they can be cute or elegant!

Step by step instructions:

  • Cut 2 identical shapes from cardstock. One will be the TOP the other will be the BOTTOM.
  • Cut a hole in the TOP.
  • Cut a piece of clear plastic to cover the hole in the TOP.
  • Decorate TOP and BOTTOM.
  • Adhere the plastic to the TOP. (Check for fingerprints on the plastic).
  • Line the underside of the TOP with double sided foam tape.
  • Place punchies, beads, etc., inside TOP.
  • Adhere BOTTOM to TOP.
  • Adhere the shaker box to your scrapbook page as an embellishment

When using Jolee's products, I keep the clear plastic backing that the die cut pieces are packaged on...works great for shaker box windows.

An easy and simple way to make fillers for shaker boxes is with Shrink Plastic.

Materials Needed:

  • Shrink Plastic (I prefer clear because you can use stamp pads to make it any color)
  • Punches
  • Stamp Pads
  • Heat Gun or Oven

You can make a variety of shapes with any size or shape punch you wish. After you punch out your shape, lightly dust it with the color ink of your choice. Heat the shrink plastic according to the package instructions.

You can use slide mounts to display Double sided small treasure. This is great for coins that you want to see both sides. What to do:

  • Cover one side of the slide mount entirely. Wrap like a gift, so none of the edges are exposed. (the slide mount should still be attached on one side so you have two "windows".)
  • Place something clear over both openings on the slide mount. I used a cut-up page protector.
  • Place the “treasure” on the transparency.
  • Put your glue all around the edges.
  • Place a small hinge on one side. Be careful with hinge placement. Make sure you plan it out well.
  • Fold slide mount over and put a weight on it until the glue dries.
  • Attach by hinge to your layout.
  • Now you have a double sided shaker box.
